Home > Movember: Growing Beards and Raising Awareness for Men’s Health
The month of November – or Movember – is Men’s Health Awareness month. You may have heard people use the term Movember, but what does it mean exactly?
Movember is an event that occurs every year where men grow out their mustaches throughout the month of November to raise awareness of men’s health issues. This could include prostate cancer, testicular cancer, or even men’s suicide.
Here, we will explain the meaning behind the mustache, the importance of men’s health, and the ways BPH Canada can help you with routine checkups and early detection.
The Movember movement started around 2003, and has since then grown to be a global phenomenon. It began with two men in Melbourne, Australia – Travis Garone and Luke Slattery – who joked about bringing the mustache back into style, as it had seemingly disappeared from recent fashion trends.
Inspired by their friend’s mother who was raising money for breast cancer awareness, the two men decided to center the campaign around men’s health and prostate cancer. They found 30 other men who were willing to participate in this challenge, and since then, the movement has gained rapid momentum and worldwide popularity.
Generating discussions around men’s health is extremely important for a number of reasons. It is a topic that often goes under-addressed due to societal expectations and the stigma around vulnerability. Men are often told to bury their emotions and are not as encouraged to seek help, whether it be for their mental or physical health.
These expectations can be extremely damaging, as statistics show that men’s health is not something to be taken lightly:
One of the main goals of the Movember movement is to raise awareness for the importance of routine checkups and early detection. Catching diseases in their early stages can have a significant impact on the likelihood of survival.
At BPH Canada, we offer several treatments for men with prostate cancer. The NanoKnife focal therapy is a new approach to localized therapy for patients with intermediate-risk prostate cancer. It is an ablation device used to destroy a targeted area of tissue. It harnesses the power of Irreversible Electroporation (IRE) to effectively destroy targeted cells without the use of thermal energy.
The second treatment available is SpaceOAR Hydrogel, which significantly minimizes the known side effects and toxicity of prostate cancer radiation therapy. It temporarily creates space between the prostate and rectum, and reduces the radiation dose delivered to the rectum during radiation therapy. It has been clinically shown to improve patient quality of life.
We also offer Transurethral Resection of Bladder Tumor (TURBT), which is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to diagnose and treat bladder cancer. During the procedure, a cystoscope is inserted through the urethra to visualize and remove or destroy abnormal bladder tissue, providing both a definitive diagnosis and therapeutic intervention.
It offers several benefits for both the diagnosis and treatment of bladder cancer. By obtaining tissue samples during the procedure, it allows for a definitive pathological diagnosis, enabling healthcare providers to determine the type and stage of the cancer.
While Movember has effectively brought attention to the topic of men’s health, we must remind ourselves that this is something to be discussed all year long. Shedding light on its importance is just the first step – taking proactive measures to seek help comes next.
