Aquablation Therapy

Exclusive to BPH Canada, this advanced, minimally invasive BPH treatment uses imaging, robotics, and a heat-free waterjet to provide long-lasting relief while retaining sexual function and minimizing complications.

We’re proud to be the only pan-Canadian surgical center offering Aquablation®—a minimally invasive, next-generation treatment for BPH. Dr. Zorn was one of the first urologists in Canada to adopt this technology, setting a new standard in men’s health. BPH Canada is also the first center in the world to perform Aquablation in an outpatient setting, delivering faster recovery and broader access.

How Does it Work?

Aquablation therapy is a robotic procedure that removes prostate tissue using the power of water.

The treatment is performed in our clinic and is done under anesthesia. The procedure typically takes less than an hour.

Procedure

There are two key steps to the Aquablation therapy procedure.

Step 1: Creating a Surgical Map

Every prostate is unique in size and shape, so it is important for a surgeon to customize the surgery to the patient’s specific anatomy.

Aquablation therapy is the only procedure that combines a camera (called a cystoscope) with ultrasound imaging, giving the surgeon the ability to see the entire prostate in real time. All other surgical procedures use only a camera, limiting the surgeon’s ability to see. The addition of ultrasound imaging in Aquablation therapy allows the surgeon to map which parts of the prostate to remove and which parts to avoid.

The surgeon will work to map around the parts of the prostate that cause irreversible complications like erectile dysfunction, ejaculatory dysfunction, and incontinence.

Step 2: Removing the Prostate Tissue

With the surgical plan in place, a robotically-controlled, heat-free waterjet removes the prostate tissue that has been mapped out. This robotic technology minimizes human error in removing prostate tissue, and ensures the prostate tissue is removed precisely, consistently, and predictably.

It should be noted that some surgeons may choose to use a minimal amount of cautery following an Aquablation procedure to control bleeding.

Duration

The Aquablation therapy procedure typically takes less than an hour to complete. Patients can be discharged on the same day or are sometimes required to complete an overnight stay for observation following the procedure.

Recovery

As with most BPH procedures, you will wake up with a catheter, which allows you to urinate while your urethra heals. You will be discharged once you are able to pee on your own and empty your bladder.

Once you are home, you may experience mild burning during urination for a couple of weeks. This can be managed with mild pain medication. Patients can resume their normal activities once approved by their doctor.

Aquablation Research And Studies

Backed by clinical evidence and real-world results, here’s why Aquablation stands apart:

  • Clinically proven in the WATER III trial to deliver lasting symptom relief for large prostates—without the trade-offs of traditional procedures.
  • Outperforms TURP for 50–80cc prostates and offers better safety and ejaculatory outcomes than HOLEP/THuLEP for larger prostates.
  • Only at BPH Canada: exclusive PROCare recovery program for optimal healing and long-term results.

Risks

The most common side effects are mild and transient.
These may include mild pain or difficulty when urinating, discomfort in the pelvis, blood in the urine, inability to empty the bladder or a frequent and/or urgent need to urinate, and bladder or urinary tract infection. Other risks include ejaculatory dysfunction and a low risk of injury to the urethra or rectum where the devices gain access to the body for treatment.

FAQS

Yes. One of the key advantages of Aquablation therapy is its ability to relieve BPH symptoms without compromising sexual function. Unlike traditional surgical treatments that may affect nerves related to erection or ejaculation, Aquablation uses real-time imaging and a heat-free waterjet to precisely remove prostate tissue while avoiding critical structures responsible for sexual health.

Clinical studies have shown that Aquablation has some of the lowest rates of sexual side effects, including ejaculatory dysfunction, compared to other BPH procedures. This makes it a preferred option for men who want effective symptom relief while maintaining their quality of life.

Aquablation therapy has been studied in nine different clinical trials. It has been shown to be a safe and effective treatment for patients suffering from lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) due to BPH.

After receiving Aquablation therapy, almost all patients were able to completely stop taking medication for their BPH symptoms. Patients reported an 80% decrease in the number of times they wake up in the night to urinate, and a 0% impact on erectile function, orgasmic function, sexual desire, intercourse satisfaction, or overall sexual satisfaction.

99% of men with BPH did not have incontinence after Aquablation therapy, and 96% of men with BPH would have considered Aquablation therapy if their doctor had told them about it.

Aquablation therapy has a very low rate of irreversible complications (incontinence, ejaculatory dysfunction, erectile dysfunction).

Aquablation therapy is a one-of-a-kind procedure. It is the only procedure that uses a heat-free waterjet controlled by robotic technology to remove prostate tissue and combines a camera (called a cystoscope) with ultrasound imaging, giving the surgeon the ability to see the entire prostate in real time. As a result, Aquablation therapy is precise, consistent and predictable and provides long-term relief no matter how large your prostate is. It has a very low rate of irreversible complications—incontinence, ejaculatory dysfunction, erectile dysfunction.
